A Celebration of Service & Support to VMI Since 1973

Established in 1973 by the trustees of the VMI Foundation, Inc., The Institute Society is an association of donors whose financial support of VMI is generous.  Founded as a means to recognize those who provided only unrestricted support to VMI’s academic and co-curricular programs through the Foundation Fund, beginning on July 1, 2002, The Institute Society now pays tribute also to those alumni and friends of the Institute who donate at the leadership level to the restricted funds that support so many activities on Post.

The Trustees of the VMI Foundation are hopeful that the recognition of gifts to restricted funds—whether they support academic, co-curricular, or intercollegiate athletic programs—encourages members of the VMI Family to provide financial support to the programs that make a VMI education a truly extraordinary experience.

The most significant reward of membership in The Institute Society is the personal satisfaction that comes from the certain knowledge that private financial support ensures the continued strength of VMI.  Institute Society members, however, are honored by the VMI Foundation at an annual formal dinner and are invited guests at other special events on Post. They also receive the VMI Alumni Agencies’ annual Report to Investors and a personalized pocket planner that contains useful information, including VMI phone numbers.

Starting on July 1, 2002, the following are the requirements for membership in the different levels of The Institute Society:

Cadet John B. Strange Order:  In order to encourage younger alumni to become leaders in support of VMI, members of those classes that have not yet celebrated their 5th Reunions or are in their 5th Reunion year and who donate at least $500 to the Foundation Fund during any fiscal year (July 1-June 30) are eligible for membership in the Strange Order. Members of those classes that have been out of Barracks for at least six years and no more than ten years and who donate at least $1,000 to the Foundation Fund during any fiscal year (July 1-June 30) will be eligible for membership in the Order as well.
