ABNEY S. BOXLEY, JR. '54
MEMORIALSCHOLARSHIP

Represented by Mr. Frank A. Boxley '55.

Through the initiative of his brother, Mr. Frank A. Boxley ’55, the late Abney S. “Buck” Boxley, Jr. ’54 was memorialized with a scholarship that provides grant-in-aid for a cadet-athlete in any class who emulates the standards and character of Mr. Boxley, demonstrating a better-than-average scholastic record and having an all-around record of performance in extra-curricular activities, indicating leadership potential. Preference is to be given to a cadet who matriculates from Virginia, and/or who is a member of VMI’s Division I Football Team.

Abney Boxley attended Episcopal High School, before matriculating at VMI from his hometown, Roanoke, Virginia, in 1950. During his cadetship, Mr. Boxley was a member of the VMI Football Team. He lettered in 1951 and 1953, and in his First Class year the starting guard was named a co-captain of the team. Later that fall, in October, he joined the Army.

Mr. Boxley was a very successful businessman and active civic leader, and served on a number of corporate and civic boards. He was named president of the family business, W.W. Boxley Company in Roanoke—one of the oldest and largest stone quarry companies in Virginia--in 1975 and served in that capacity until his death.

Mr. Boxley was a member of the VMI Board of Visitors from 1978-85, serving continually on the Athletic Committee, including six years as that committee’s chairman. He also served as a member of the Keydet Club’s Board of Governors.

Mr. Boxley was married to the former Mary H. Mead; they had three children: Abney III, Charles and Martha.

Both brothers, Abney, Jr. and Frank, followed in their father’s footsteps to VMI. Mr. Abney S. Boxley, Sr., graduated with the VMI Class of 1925 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

Cadet Christian R. Kelly '10 is recognized in the name of the
Abney S. Boxley, Jr. '54 Memorial Scholarship for the 2006-07 year.
