Robert Gamble Cabell V '47

The  Robert Gamble Cabell V '47 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003. Grant-in-aid from the Scholarship will be awarded annually to a cadet-athlete (or cadet-athletes) who is (a) an upperclassman, (b) a member of the VMI football team, (c) has a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better, (d) has financial need, and (e) exemplifies spirit, determination and a commitment to excellence.

Robert Gamble Cabell V matriculated at VMI from Savannah, Georgia, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering—representing the third consecutive generation of his family to graduate from the Institute. His grandfather, Robert G. Cabell, Jr., VMI Class of  1867, was a member of the New Market Corps. His father, John L. Cabell, was a member of the VMI Class of 1901, and his brother, John B. Cabell, was a member of the Class of 1937.

As a cadet, Cabell, affectionately known by his Brother Rats and fellow members of the Corps as “Hayroll,” was a member of the football team for three years and of the swimming team for one year. During his second class year, he was a cadet sergeant and a member of the Glee Club and the BOMB staff.

Cabell served in the U.S. Army from 1948-50. His business career began in Greenville, South Carolina, where he was employed by Daniel Construction Company. He returned to Savannah two years later to establish his own company, Tractor Welding Company.

In 1963, he and his family moved to a family farm near Columbia, Virginia, which Cabell operated as a beef cattle industry. He later became president of Arvonia-Buckingham Slate Company in Arvonia, Virginia, and served in that position for 13 years until his retirement in the early 1980s.

Cabell was an accomplished sportsman, winning over 50 awards in Eastern and Southeastern regional skeet shooting competitions. He sailed competitively as a member of the Savannah Yacht Club.

He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Society of Colonial Wars (Savannah Chapter), the Oglethorpe Club of Savannah and the Commonwealth Club in Richmond, Virginia. He was a lifetime member of the Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah.

He and his wife, Priscilla Harriss Cabell, had three children: Elizabeth, Mark, and John, VMI Class of 1990 and Distinguished Graduate. Cabell died on December 31, 1995.

Cadet Thomas E. Lloyd '07 is recognized in the name of the Robert Gamble Cabell V '47 Memorial Scholarship for the 2007-08 school year. He is pictured above with fund representative Mrs. Robert G. (Priscilla) Cabell.
