Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Dr. Martin D. Delaney, Jr. '28 Memorial Scholarship was established by his widow, Maude, and his daughter, Mrs. Peggy Baldwin, to honor the memory of a man who served VMI on a voluntary basis as the Keydets' team physician for 45 years. Doc Delaney matriculated from Arlington, VA, and earned a BS degree in chemistry. He received his MD from Georgetown University and took over his father's medical practice, which he maintained until his death on March 19, 1986. From 1928-42 he served as a captain in the US Marine Corps Reserves. Doc, at his own expense, attended to VMI football players across the country in over 400 games in 39 years (missing only 4 games), beginning in 1946. He served on numerous committees and boards related to VMI athletics. He was president of the Keydet Club from 1969-71, and became a charter member of the VMI Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972. In 1974 he was made an honorary member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. In 1958 he initiated an Award of Honor that would later become the Delaney Football Award, presented to the most improved football player over a four-year career. The Keydet Club awarded its highest honor, the Spirit of VMI Award, to Doc in 1985. He and his wife Maude had eight children. Two of his sons, Martin III and Michael, and a grandson, Robert "Bob" Baldwin" are also VMI graduates of the classes of '66, '69 and '85, respectively.
