Hugh Fain, Jr. '49C

The Hugh M. Fain, Jr. '49C Scholarship, held by the VMI Foundation, provides need-based grant-in-aid  to a basketball athlete, with preference to a cadet who is a legal resident of East Tennessee or southwest Virginia, and who has demonstrated academic achievement and improvement. It was established through the generosity of Robert H. Patterson, Jr. '49C, Mrs. Elaine E. Culley, and Hugh M. Fain III '80.

Hugh Fain, Jr.  '49C was a four-year Keydet basketball player, and was team captain during his first class year.

He matriculated from Bristol, Tennessee, and earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He was 42 years old and vice president of Lane-Penn Company in Richmond, Virginia, when he died in 1969.

in the name of the Hugh M. Fain, Jr. '49C Scholarship
for the 2007-08 school year.
