The Glenn Family Scholarship was established in 2001 in honor of the Glenn Family's long association with the Institute. It assists an outstanding athlete, preferably one who matriculates from North or South Carolina, who exemplifies spirit, determination and a commitment to excellence.

In 1867, James Dodge Glenn matriculated at VMI from Leaksville (now called Eden), North Carolina, and graduated With Distinction in 1871. He worked as a civil engineer, then managed his uncle's plantation, He was elected to the NC House of Representatives in 1880, and NC Senate in 1900. In 1905 he was appointed private secretary to his brother, Governor Robert B. Glenn, and served in this capacity until his death in October of the same year.

Chalmers L. Glenn III is the great-grandson of Gov. Glenn. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC, and received a BS degree in business administration from the Univ. of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). He retired in 1993 as a Human Resources Consultant.

Sylvia Morrow Glenn is the wife of Chalmers L. Glenn III, and is a native of Albemarle, NC.

She received an associate of arts degree from Peace College and worked

at an elementary school for several years, before beginning her primary career as mother .

Chalmers L. Glen IV matriculated at VMI from Charlotte, NC, and graduated With Distinction with a BA degree in economics in 1980. During his cadetship, he was a member of the football team for four years, and the track team for one year. He lettered in both sports. He later received an MBA degree from Winthrop College. He worked for several years in Human Resources, but is currently a partner in the investment firm of UBS Paine Webber in Sumter, SC.
