The Gottwald Scholarship was established by Bruce C. Gottwald '54, a past president of the Keydet Club. It assists an athlete who is an upperclassman, and who is majoring in either chemistry or economics and has lettered in his/her sport.

Gottwald matriculated from Richmond, Virginia, and graduated with a BS degree in chemistry. He is chairman (and recently retired CEO) of Ethyl Corporation.

He was president of the Keydet Club from 1971-73, a member of the VMI Board of Visitors from 1978-82 and from 1995-2001, and a member of the VMI Foundation Trustees from 1985-1992.

He was awarded the VMI Foundation's Distinguished Service Award in 1993.
