CHARLES M. "BUDGE" HUNTER '29 SCHOLARSHIP

"Budge" Hunter '29

The Charles M. "Budge" Hunter '29 Scholarship was established by Charles M. Hunter, Jr. '75 in 1998 in honor of his late father. It provides grant-in-aid to qualified student-athletes, with preference given to residents of Southwest Virginia, who have demonstrated outstanding academic, athletic and community achievement and service.

Mr. Hunter matriculated from Pounding Mill, Virginia, and graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering.

He served as a major in the Third Division of the US Marine Corps from 1942-46 in the Pacific Theater, and was the highest ranking officer from Tazewell County. After leaving active duty, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the USMC Reserve from 1946-59.

He was CEO and president of Pounding Mill Quarry, and also headed several subsidiary quarry and oil companies as well as serving as director of the National Limestone Institute and the Tazewell National Bank.

He was deeply involved with many civic organizations in the Tazewell community and was instrumental in establishing the Southwest Virginia Community College.

Mr. Hunter loved VMI and VMI Athletics, and was a charter member of the Keydet Club. He died at the age of 89 on August 23, 1997.
