The Hupp Family Athletic Scholarship was established in 2005 by William T. Hupp '77, Stephen E. Hupp '84, and Mr. and Mrs. H. Thomas Hupp, Jr. '44. It provides assistance to a member of a VMI intercollegiate athletic team who exemplifies spirit, determination and a commitment to excellence, with preference given to an athlete who (a) is a member of the football team and/or (b) matriculates from (i) the Richmond (Va.) metropolitan area or (ii) the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Mr. H. Thomas Hupp, Jr. ’44, his wife, Mrs. Margaret Estes Hupp, and their two sons, Mr. William T. Hupp ’77 and Mr. Stephen E. Hupp ’84, and their respective families, have generously provided personal and monetary support to VMI and its intercollegiate athletic program. This Scholarship has been established by the Hupp Family to memorialize the bonds that exist between them and the Institute, and to assure continued growth and development of VMI’s football and other athletic programs.

H. Thomas Hupp, Jr., matriculated at the Institute from Chase City, Virginia, with the Class of 1944. As a cadet, he earned the rank of First Lieutenant in the Corps. His cadetship was interrupted by World War II, when he served in the U.S. Army-Infantry in the European Theatre. He served his last seven months being held as a Prisoner of War in Germany.  He returned to the Institute and graduated in February 1947, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

Hupp ’44 has been married to the former Margaret Ann Estes since October 1947.  They have two children: Billy ’77 and Steve ’84 and five grandchildren.

Margaret Estes Hupp was born and raised in Chase City, Virginia and graduated from Mary Washington College in 1947, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She died in May 2007.

William T. (Billy) Hupp matriculated at VMI from Richmond, Virginia, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering with the Class of 1977. During his cadetship, Hupp was a member of the basketball and baseball teams for one year and the rugby sport team for three years.

He served in the U.S. Army for one year and the U.S. Army Reserve for 7 years. Hupp joined the family business Estes Express Lines, a national motor freight company headquartered in Richmond, in 1977. Today, he serves as the executive vice president of Estes.

Hupp ’77 is married to the former Theresa Jane Stewart of Greenville, South Carolina. They have two children: William, Jr. (19) and Charlotte (16).

He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and played basketball for one year.

He served in the U.S. Army for one year and the U.S. Army Reserve for thirteen years. Hupp was an engineer for the Virginia State Corporation Commission for three years before joining the family business, Estes Express Lines, in 1987. Today, he serves as the corporate secretary of Estes.
