Endowed Scholarship Fund - BASKETBALL
The John E. Kemper '68 Basketball Scholarship was established in 2004 by Mr. Kemper. The scholarship is granted to a basketball athlete who exemplifies spirit, determination and a commitment Kemper matriculated at VMI from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a BS degree in civil engineering. As a cadet, Kemper played one year of baseball, Rat basketball and varsity basketball. Kemper was the starting guard for three years and served as co-captain of the team his First Class year. He averaged in double figures all three years as a starter and led the team in scoring in his Second Class year (14.2) and First Class year (18.8). He was all Big Five and second team All-Southern Conference in his First Class year. Kemper was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1999, he was selected by the Alexandria Sportsmen Club as a member of Alexandria’s 100 greatest athletes and received the Gene Bode Memorial Hall of Fame Award from that same organization in 2003. After graduating from VMI, Kemper served from 1969-72 in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Captain) and earned the Army Commendation Medal. Kemper is currently the majority owner, chairman and chief executive officer of KLMK Group, LLC, a healthcare facilities consulting firm headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. He has recently authored a book entitled Launching a Healthcare Capital Project, published by the American College of Healthcare Executives.He was a member of the VMI Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1975-79, and the VMI Keydet Club Board of Governors from 1980-1986, and is serving his second term on the Board of Governors that began in 2002. Kemper is married to the former Deborah Barbieri of Lynchburg, Virginia; they live in Richmond. Kemper has one son, John Garrett Kemper, a graduate of Hampden Sydney College and William and Mary Law School who is currently vice president and general counsel for Kemper Consulting in Norfolk, Virginia. Kemper’s brother, Richard H. Kemper, Jr., is a member of the VMI Class of 1962.
