Endowed Scholarship Fund - Wresting
The Captain John W. Kennedy '69 Memorial Scholarship was established by his parents, Brother Rats and VMI friends to assist a wrestling athlete. Kennedy, an Air Force captain, was listed as MIA in Viet Nam on August 16, 1971, and was declared KIA on July 6, 1978. His remains were recovered and he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in 1996. He was 24 at the time of his death. A Purple Heart Medal was awarded to him posthumously. Kennedy matriculated at VMI from Arlington, Virginia, and graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering. He was an excellent student and was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He served on the Honor Court and was president of the Monogram Club. He was also an excellent athlete. A member and co-captain of both the VMI Wrestling and Soccer teams, he won the Southern Conference championship in wrestling in his First Class year. Kennedy was posthumously inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame (Wrestling) in 1980.
