The Mack-Foster 1956 Scholarship was established by Mr. P. Wesley Foster, Jr. '56 to provide scholarship assistance to a football athlete who initially walked on or received partial aid, and has demonstrated satisfactory athletic and academic performance to merit aid from this fund.

Mack matriculated from Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from VMI with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a Distinguished Student throughout his cadetship, was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Dean's Advisory Council.

After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and spent four years in Germany as a Green Beret prior to his service as a company commander in the 101st Airborne Division. Captain Mack was awarded the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters and V Device, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart. He was killed in action in Vietnam on Sept. 17, 1966, at the age of 31.

Foster, his Brother Rat and fellow Georgian, matriculated from Forest Park and earned a BA degree in English. As a cadet, Foster played football, served on the Honor Court and was president of the Officers of the Guard Association.

After graduation, Foster served for two years in the U.S. Army (Field Artillery), holding the rank of first lieutenant, and received the Army Commendation Medal.

Most of his professional life has been spent in real estate, and he is owner and president of Long and Foster Real Estate, Inc.

Foster has served on the Keydet Club Board of Governors and the VMI Foundation Board of Trustees
