MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Robert A. Marr, Jr. '18

The Col. Robert A. Marr, Jr. '18 Memorial Scholarship was established in 1978 to provide grant-in-aid to cadet-athlete who works hard, has a good attitude with self discipline and honor as strong foundations, manifests those traits of character and honorable conduct and spirit typical of VMI men, with preference given to a civil engineering major.

Marr matriculated at VMI from Norfolk, Virginia, and graduated as Distinguished with a BS degree in civil engineering. He also received the  Jackson Hope Medal-Second Honor.

He joined VMI's faculty in 1919 as an instructor in math and in 1921 moved to the civil engineering department where he became its head in 1941.

When he returned to the Institute, he became a timer and official at track and cross country meets. He also tutored cadets, including athletes, at nights and on weekends. He was also an avid baseball fan.

The Class of 1952 dedicated their BOMB to him in honor of his dedication to all cadets.

Col. Marr retired from his teaching in 1955 but continued on the staff as an advisor on placement. He died in March 1959.
