John McDowell, Jr. '55

The John W. McDowell, Jr. '55 Basketball Scholarship was established in 1995 by Mrs. McDowell in memory of her late husband.

The scholarship is granted to a basketball athlete who has made a significant contribution to the program and, preferably, is a fourth classman.

Dr. McDowell matriculated from Halstead, Kansas. A Distinguished Graduate, he received a BS degree in chemistry. He was a four-year member of the VMI basketball team and served as co-captain during his first class year. He was also a member of the Monogram Club and the Glee Club.

After graduating, he taught chemistry at VMI for one year prior to attending Indiana University where he earned his doctorate in chemistry. Dr. McDowell had a long and distinguished career as director of research and development for Johnson & Johnson Medical and received the Johnson Medal for Research and Development in 1986.
