MEMORIAL FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP

Jeff "Pup" Morgan '80

The Jeffrey J. Morgan '80 Memorial Football Scholarship was established by Brother Rats, other alumni and friends of VMI following the tragic death of the Keydet Club's executive vice president on April 14, 2000. It provides scholarship assistance to a football player, preferably one who plays the position of noseguard.

Morgan was killed when the plane he was flying crashed in Rockingham County; he was returning to Lexington from a Keydet Club-sponsored golf tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Morgan matriculated at VMI from Lynchburg, Virginia, where he had been a standout football player at E.C. Glass High School. He was a Dean's List student and graduated with a BA degree in economics. He later earned his MBA from James Madison University.

He was a four-year starter on the Keydet football team at the noseguard position. His 1977 team won the SoCon championship, and he was a team captain in his last college season. He was presented the Henry Fairfax Ayers Medal as the most valuable senior player.

Before returning to his alma mater to head up the Keydet Club, Morgan worked for International Circuit Technolocy, C.B. Fleet Company, and Babcock and Wilcox. He was also a math teacher, and spent the 1983-84 years as a graduate assistant football coach at VMI under Bob Thalman while working on his MBA degree.

In 1991 he was hired as executive vice president of the Keydet Club, and during his tenure the foundation enjoyed unprecedented growth. He was inducted posthumously into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
