The Mundy Family Athletic Scholarship was established in 2005 by G. Marshall Mundy. It provides assistance to a member of the VMI Basketball Team or, if none, the VMI Football Team, who exemplifies spirit, determination and a commitment to excellence, with preference given to an athlete who matriculates from (i) the Roanoke, Virginia, metropolitan area or (ii) Southwest Virginia.

Three generations of Mundy gentlemen have attended VMI.

Gardner Adams Mundy matriculated at VMI from Roanoke, Virginia, with the Class of 1931. He was followed by his brother Jack Broaddus Mundy, who also matriculated from Roanoke and who graduated with the Class of 1937 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Forced to leave VMI in his Second Class year for financial reasons during the Depression, Gardner Adams Mundy was later determined that his two sons would attend and graduate from the Institute. Attending VMI in Gardner Adams Mundy’s footsteps were his two sons, Gardner Marshall Mundy ’56 and Watson Adams Mundy ’59, and two grandsons, Stephens Marshall Mundy ’80 and Gardner Adams Mundy II ’98.

G. Marshall Mundy ’56 matriculated at VMI from Roanoke and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. As a cadet, he was Distinguished Academically, a Distinguished Military Student, listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and lettered in basketball, which he played for three years. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army for two years as a lieutenant.

He continued his education at the University of Virginia Law School where he received his LLB in

1962. While attending UVA Law School, he was the Executive Editor of the Virginia Law Review in

 1961-1962 and a member of ODK and the Raven Society.

Mundy is a senior partner in the law firm of Mundy, Rogers & Associates, LLP, in Roanoke. He is a member of the Roanoke, Virginia, and American Bar Associations. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an Advocate in the American Board of Trial Advocates and a Fellow in the American Bar Foundation and Virginia Bar Foundation. Membership is each of these organizations is limited to one percent of the attorneys in Virginia. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since it was first published in 1987.

He has served on the VMI Keydet Club Board of Governors and the VMI Alumni Association Board of Directors, and as a past president of the Roanoke alumni chapter. In July 2005, he was appointed to the VMI Board of Visitors by Governor Mark Warner.

Mundy ’56 and his wife Monika live in Roanoke. He has four children: Stephens ’80, Liza, Marshall, Jr., and Natalie.

Stephens Marshall Mundy attended VMI for one year, and later earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Roanoke College and his Masters degree in Hospital Administration from The Medical College of Virginia. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York. He and his wife Leigh have two sons, Alexander and Robert.

The late Watson Adams Mundy ’59 followed his brother Marshall to VMI and also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in 1959-60 and U.S. Army Reserve from 1960 to 1967. He earned his MBA degree from the University of Virginia Business School in 1962. At the time of his death in 1998, Mundy was an advertising consultant. He and his widow Mary Taylor (Molly) Mundy had a son, Gardner ’98, and a daughter, Taylor.

Gardner Adams Mundy II matriculated at VMI from Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated With Distinction in 1998, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. In his First Class year, he was a Batallion S-5 Lieutenant. Following graduation, Mundy II taught at private schools for three years and then served as Assistant to the VMI Superintendent for two years. He obtained his Masters Degree in History from The University of Richmond in 2004 and is currently teaching history at The Steward School in Richmond.

Attending VMI in Jack Broaddus Mundy’s footsteps was a son, Jack Broaddus Mundy, Jr., who graduated in 1967, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He served in the U.S. Army following his cadetship, and was awarded the Bronze Star. Mundy, Jr. is a realtor with Coldwell Banker Townside, Realtors, in Blacksburg, Virginia. He and his wife Sue have a son, Jack, and two daughters, Kimberly and Robyn.
