The W. Ware Smith ’26 Scholarship was established by bequest to provide grant-in-aid to one or more incoming out-of-state Rat cadet-athletes who are members of the VMI football team and who exemplify spirit, determination and a commitment to excellence. Preference for awarding the scholarship shall be to an incoming Rat who matriculates from Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, Texas or Florida.

Smith matriculated at VMI from Richmond, Virginia, and graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1942-46 at the rank of colonel.

He was a district manager for Bell Atlantic, Inc., in Roanoke, and died on January 28, 1995.

Cadet Michael A. Rainey-Wiles '11 (Football) is recognized in the name of
the W. Ware Smith '26 Scholarship for the 2007-08 school year.
