Endowed Scholarship Fund - Unrestricted
The William H. Stephens, Jr. ’73 Family Athletic Scholarship at the Virginia Military Institute was established in 2006 to provide annual grant-in-aid to a cadet who is a member of any NCAA Division 1 athletic team at VMI. William H. Stephens, Jr. matriculated at VMI from Chesterfield County, Virginia. He was a Distinguished Military graduate in the VMI Class of 1973, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Known by his Brother Rats as “Misto,” Stephens was elected Class Historian. As a cadet, Stephens lettered in basketball for two years and track for three years. He was also a member of the VMI Rugby Club. He was elected vice president of the Monogram Club and also served on the VMI Athletic Council. Following his cadetship, Stephens served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1973 to 1981. Professionally, Stephens’ career has been involved in the startup and development of various service businesses. In 1986, he co-founded Voice-Tel Enterprises, which was named an Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Private Company in 1994 and 1995. Today, Stephens is co-owner of University Instructors, Inc., a regional education services company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Stephens has been a long-time leadership member of the VMI Keydet Club, Inc., and has served on the Keydet Club’s Board of Governors since 1997. He will serve as president of the Board, beginning in 2007. Linda Livesay Stephens and Bill Stephens have been married for 32 years. She is a native of Richmond, Virginia, and graduated from Madison College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing. The Stephenses live in Midlothian, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina. They have two grown children: William III, and Kara Lauren.
