Frank Webb '69

The Frank Wright Webb '69 Memorial Basketball Scholarship was established by LtC John M. Webb '45 in memory of his late son who was killed in action while serving in Viet Nam. This scholarship was the first endowed scholarship established specifically for a basketball player.

The scholarship is granted to a basketball athlete, with preference given to an upperclassman from Virginia.

Webb matriculated from Richmond, Virginia. During his high school years, he received the varsity monogram in both football and basketball. In the late spring of his Rat year at VMI, Webb left the Institute to enlist in the Army.

Due to outstanding performances in both basic training and advanced infantry training, he requested and was assigned to the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He graduated in May 1967 in the top quarter of his class and was assigned to a mechanized infantry unit at Fort Hood, Texas.

In September 1967, Lt. Webb went to Viet Nam. Prior to his death, he had already been awarded the Air Medal and three Purple Hearts. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. The Army said the awards came as the result of Lt. Webb's action in organizing his unit while it was under heavy enemy attack. The wounded officer regrouped his men, supervised the distribution of ammunition and called in artillery. He was fatally wounded while adjusting artillery fire on the advancing enemy.
