Endowed Scholarship Fund - Football
The Richard and Jill Woolwine '82 Football Scholarship was established in 2007 in conjunction with Mr. Woolwine's 25th Class Reunion. It provides scholarship assistance to a football athlete. Richard Woolwine matriculated at VMI with the Class of 1982, and graduated With Distinction, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. As a cadet, Woolwine was a Dean’s List student all four years of his cadetship. He was also an outstanding defensive back on the VMI football team under the guidance of head coach Bob Thalman. During his freshman year, Woolwine and his teammates beat William & Mary, The Citadel, Marshall, and Virginia Tech; tied Appalachian State; and lost to the University of Virginia by only three points. That 1981 team posted the last winning season for the VMI Keydets. Off the field, Woolwine has built a successful and distinguished career in the finance industry. He held positions of increasing responsibility within the capital markets and commercial lending division of Chemical Bank and JPMorgan Chase & Co., and also served as chief operating officer responsible for day-to-day operations of a leading importer of consumer products. In 1995, Woolwine and his brother, Kelly, founded Atlantic Credit & Finance, Inc., a purchaser and manager of consumer-distressed asset portfolios. Woolwine serves as chief executive officer and chairman of the board; his brother serves as president. The company is headquartered in Roanoke, Va., with offices Richmond, Va., and Phoenix, Ariz. As of 2007, Atlantic Credit & Finance manages more than $6 billion of unsecured, consumer-distressed assets. Atlantic Credit & Finance also ranks as one of the largest private employers in the Roanoke Valley. Under Woolwine’s direction, the company has earned a number of distinctions including being named for three consecutive years to the prestigious Inc. 500 annual list of the fastest growing companies. In fact, Atlantic Credit & Finance was named by Inc. magazine as the 16th, 25th and 27th fastest growing company in America from 2002–2004. Woolwine and his wife, Jill, have three daughters (twins Stephanie and Tiffany, and Cali) and one son (Clay). The family lives in Roanoke, Va.
