De Worrell matriculated from Armore, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering. He was a fullback on the football team for three years and was awarded the Dr. Martin D. Delaney, Jr. '28 Football Award of Merit. Following graduation, Worrell served from 1962-64 as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
