A. Stuart Bolling, Jr. '44

The A. Stuart Bolling, Jr. '44 Scholarship, established in 1993 and held by the VMI Keydet Club, assists an outstanding cadet-athlete.

Bolling came to VMI after attending Augusta Military Academy, matriculating with the Class of 1944.

During his Second Class year, he went into USMC as a lieutenant and served in the Pacific Theatre. Serving under then Col. Lewis B. Puller '21, Bolling was awarded the Distin-guished Flying Cross for low aerial reconnaissance at Okinawa. After VJ day, he served in China, and was recalled to active service for the Korean conflict.

He returned to VMI and graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering in 1948. He attended graduate school at the University of Virginia Engineering School.

Bolling founded A. Stuart Bolling, Inc., a public utilities contractor.

He believed strongly in the citizen-soldier and scholar-athlete concepts of VMI, and credited the Institute as being the single most important influence on his character and life.

Bolling died in February 1993.

A son-in-law, Peter I.C. Knowles II '70, nephew, Robert C. Randolph '67, and a grandson, Peter I.C. Knowles III '05 all graduated from VMI..
