Represented by Mrs. Carolyn Thomas Byrd of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Charlie Byrd, Sr. '55

The Charles F. Byrd, Sr. '55 Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by bequest from the estate of late Mr. Byrd to provide scholarship assistance to VMI cadet-athletes.

Charles F. Byrd matriculated from Jackson, Mississippi, and graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering.

He was a scholarship athlete on the VMI football team, and was elected team captain during his First Class year.

An outstanding athlete, he was also a four-year member of the track team and a two-year member of the basketball program which he served as co-captain during his First Class year.

He set team and conference records in the shot put and discus programs, and was also the leading receiver on the football team before moving to tackle his First Class year to help boost a weakened line due to injuries.

Byrd held a combined 10 monograms in three sports during his cadetship, and was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.

Also as a cadet, Byrd was the F Company first lieutenant in his senior year and was a member of the Honor Court. He was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.

After graduating from VMI, Byrd served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-59 and as a captain in the Air Guard from 1959-62.

He worked in the construction business for several years and then became part owner and vice president of McCullough Associates, Inc., in 1972. He was the principal owner of Byrd-Forbes, Inc., Engineering Services.

Byrd was a member of the Keydet Club Board of Governors from 1986-92. He died in December 1997.
