The John L. Engels, Jr. '59 Scholarship assists an out-of-state football player who exhibits outstanding leadership traits on and off the field.

Mr. Engels '59 established the scholarship in memory of his late father, John L. Engels '29.

Engels '59 matriculated from Racine, Wisconsin, and graduated from VMI with a BA degree in history. He received a football scholarship and played that sport, as well as tennis, for four years, and basketball for one year. He lettered in football three years. He was elected vice president of his class.

He is chairman of Asset International.

Cadet Samuel C. Palmer '11 (Football) is recognized in the name of the John L. Engels, Jr. '59 Scholarship in the 2007-08 school year.
