Endowed Scholarship Fund - Unrestricted
The Frank L. Summers '22 Athletic Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide grant-in-aid for a cadet-athlete who is a member of the football, basketball, baseball or track team at VMI. First preference will be given to an athlete from Staunton, August County or Richmond, Virginia. Francis L. Summers matriculated at VMI from Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated with his Class of 1922 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. As a cadet, he lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. Perhaps best known for his performance as left tackle on VMI's undefeated and untied "Flying Squadron" football team of 1921, he also served as captain of the football and track teams, and as president of both the Athletic Council and the Monogram Club, in his First Class year. He was named to two All-Southern teams and won the Williamson Graham Cup for the outstanding athlete at VMI. After VMI, he taught and coached at Augusta Military Academy and Staunton Military Academy before returning to VMI as alumni secretary and coach of the Rat football and baseball teams and the varsity basketball team. Later in his career, he was head coach and athletic director at Randolph-Macon College and at Hampden Sydney College before serving as assistant field director of the American Red Cross in Okinawa. In 1947 he returned to VMI as athletic director and served in that capacity until his resignation in 1951 to join the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. He served as the manager of the Staunton office until his retirement. He served as president of the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of VMI alumni, was a charter member of the VMI Athletic Hall of Fame, and a posthumous inductee of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He died in August 1974.
